Federal Programs
The goal of the Federal Programs Department is to assist in providing educational excellence for students in Newton County Schools by directing the implementation of Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA), Title I, Part A Programs for Disadvantaged Children, Title I, Part D Prevention and Education Programs for Children and Youth who are Neglected, Delinquent or At-Risk, and Title X, Part C McKinney-Vento Assistance Act - Education for Homeless Children and Youth.
Title I, Part A - Improving the Academic Achievement of the Disadvantaged
Title I, Part A of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965, as amended by the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), is intended “to ensure that all children have a fair, equal, and significant opportunity to obtain a high-quality education and reach, at a minimum, proficiency on challenging State academic achievement standards and State academic assessments.” [ESEA Sec. 1001(1)].
To achieve this purpose, Title I, Part A provides financial assistance to local educational agencies (LEAs) and schools with high numbers or high percentages of children from low-income families. These funds are used to support state and local reform efforts tied to challenging State academic standards in order to reinforce and enhance efforts to improve teaching and learning for students
